Shanghai: vivere l’emozione di una Megalopoli

(English version below the photo gallery)

Ci è capitato altre volte, all’estero, di presentare i nostri progetti in importanti gallerie e musei.

See you soon Shanghai! We’ll be back!

ENGLISH VERSION

Here we are in Shanghai, a city puzzling us for its nature of huge metropolis, a perfect place to collect new suggestions for our international research project MEGALOPOLIS. The project is indeed born from our working experiences in bug cities such as Mexico City, Tehran, Seoul, London etc. Skyscrapers with strange, futuristic shapes, of dizzying heights, masses of people walking in the same indefinite flow, lights, shopping malls, images, all the elements of the metropolis. We have been invited here to lead a workshop, thanks to the collaboration of the Italian Institute of culture in Shanghai, by Vertebra theatre, one of the Chinese emerging groups more active in the research and the production of contemporary international theatre. The place for the workshop is the prestigious Shanghai Theatre Academy. Our pupils are coming from different parts of the country and have various backgrounds: theatre academy teachers, professional theatre and movie actors, but also people coming from different arts fields. They are all interested in the main theme of our work: the discovery of the organic quality of the body and the creative skill of the performer for the achievement of the scenic truth. The Organic body is indeed the title of our workshop focused on our working method based on the physical and vocal training of the performer. The workshop will last 5 days from 18th to 22th July and will lead us to create a performance site-specific in one of the most important contemporary arts museum of China. What we can guess from our short term staying in Shanghai and talking with Alberto Manai, the director of the Italian Institute of culture of Shanghai, who has introduced us to the cultural life of this city taking lots of care of us, is that in this country the contemporary art acts as a driving force for theatre. It has happened often to us to present our projects in renowned art galleries and museums. Rarely this happen in Italy where the fields are more separated. We are really happy to think the performance for the spaces of The Power Station of Art. We have chosen the SPA location with its suggestive white empty pools and the terrace and its breath taking view on the city. Of course we had not considered the absence of air condition that has challenged our performers and the audience but that has transformed the performance in an unique experience of share. At 3pm of the 23th July, with 40 degrees, deepen in the hot summer, we let the audience in, free to move in the space of the performance. Our actors are ready, full of beauty, standing on the borders of the pools, concentrated and dripping with sweat. The music composed by Alberto Novello Jestern starts, and let the spectators dive in a surreal dimension, all white and lightened by the shining sun filtering through the glass door that open the view on the city. The bodies start to move, to explore the space as animals seeking fro their territory, invading the audience space, starting a rhythm…and the performance begins. Forty minutes in which the emotion of the performers grows together with the one of the spectators, in which a common breathing starts to fill the space and the tears start to outcrop. Is the rediscovery of the body in its individuality and as unique essence of a group. We are moved too and we understand we have achieved our aim: not only transmitting a technique but instilling a passion, a discipline, a new way of doing theatre. We know we’ll come back soon, we can feel it, and the last hug with the group of the actors and all the fabulous staff of Vertebra theatre give us this confirm.
